24th ANNUAL HONORS CONVOCATION AND MORTAR BOARD INITIATION

Mortar Board welcomes 25 newly initiated members into the Xi Phi Chapter of Mortar Board!  The event was held on April 15, 2012 at 3:00pm in the Ponderosa Ballroom of the Nebraskan Student Union. Photos below captured the initiation process.

APPLAUDING EXCELLENCE: RECOGNIZING STUDENT LEADERS--ONE OF OUR VERY OWN!

"On April 11, 2012, the UNK Office of Student Life Division of Student Affairs hosted the first annual Applauding Excellence: Recognizing Student Leaders reception and program. A number of students and student organizations were honored with awards. We are exceptionally proud of our Membership Selection Chair, McKenzie Wiese, who was named Outstanding Student Organization Leader. Not only did Mortar Board nominate her for her tireless efforts to plan, publicize, and lead the group through Membership Selection, the Loper Programming and Activities Council (LPAC) also nominated her for her service as LPAC President. This photo was taken with Dean of Student Affairs Dr. Joe Oravecz right after McKenzie received her award.

Considering officers from all 200 UNK student organizations were eligible for this award, this is indeed a tremendous honor. Thanks for all of your hard work and for representing Mortar Board so well, McKenzie!"- Dr. Amber Messersmith

HONORS CONVOCATION

As part of our leadership activities, the Mortar Board Chapter hosts the Honors Convocation in April each year.  At this event, the Chapter honors the outgoing Mortar Board members, recognizes and awards the Notable Freshman & Sophomore Award, and initiates the newly selected Mortar Board members.
The Honors Convocation event took place on April 15, 2012 at 2:00pm in the Ponderosa Ballroom at the Nebraskan Student Union.

MORTAR BOARD WEEK Feb. 12-18, 2012

MORTAR BOARD WEEK:  

• Freshmen Recognition Event-- Monday, February 13, 2012 at 8:00pm
• This event recognized freshmen at the top of their class after their first semester of college by congratulating them on their academic performance. 
• The event took place in the Cedar Room of the Nebraskan Student Union.
•  Keynote Speakers: Brad Green and Dr. Oravecz
•  
• Last Lecture Series- Wednesday, February 15, 2012 -Copeland Hall Rm 142-7:00pm

o    Mortar Board hosted and facilitated the campus tradition in which Mortar Board, along with the campus honored a faculty member.  This year’s speaker was Dr. Kenneth Trantham. 

o    Dr. Trantham is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Physics and Physical Science at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. 

•    Title of Dr. Trantham’s lecture: “Liberal Arts Education and the Fourier Series; An Analogy”

• Dr. Trantham’s lecture was recorded and made into a podcast. Check out his amazing lecture!   http://podcasts.unk.edu/groups/liberalarts/blog/

• Mortar Board Alumni Social- Thursday,  February 16, 2012- 4:30-6:30pm
• The Chapter organized a meet and greet social with our area Alumni.
• The event was held in order to network and catch up with our Alumni while enjoying wine donated by Mac’s Creek Winery.
• The event was held at the Alumni House.

KEARNEY PUBLIC SCHOOLS TUTORING

As a scholarship activity, the Mortar Board members decided to help KPS by tutoring students.  This year’s lucky school is Bryant Elementary!  Throughout the Spring 2012 semester, each Mortar Board member volunteered to sign up for two different dates to help 5th graders with any homework they may have between 3:15-4:00pm.
