MORTAR
BOARD
Scholars…Chosen for Leadership…United to Serve
What is Mortar Board?
Mortar Board is
a national honor society recognizing college seniors for their achievements in
scholarship, leadership, and service. There are 231 chartered Mortar Board
chapters nationwide. Our chapter, Xi Phi, was first
established in 1924 on the then-Nebraska State Teachers College campus as an
honor society with standards similar to those of Mortar Board. In the 1980s,
Bobbie McKenzie and Jackie Rosenlof, Mortar Board members and chapter advisors,
felt a Mortar Board chapter belonged on the then-Kearney State College campus.
With the support of Kearney State President William Nester, they compiled and
submitted a petition twice. In 1986, national officers visited campus to talk
with faculty, examine curriculum, and interact with Xi Phi honor society members.
The meeting was a success, and a chartering ceremony occurred on April 24th,
1988.
UNK's chapter has a long history of excellence. We have been awarded the Gold Torch awards 15 of the last 16 years by the national Mortar Board Headquarters organization, designating that we have exceeded the expectations for a chapter in the areas of scholarship, leadership, and service. We have earned multiple Project Excellence awards, including 9 of the approximately 90 awards given in 2014. In August 2014, our chapter received the Ruth Weimer Mount Chapter Excellence Award at the national conference in Atlanta. This award recognizes the top Mortar Board chapter in the country. In receiving this award, UNK joins fellow award winners such as Purdue University, Kansas State University, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, University of Washington, University of California Los Angeles, and The Ohio State University as receiving of this prestigious award.
Our Mortar Board chapter is an active group, so
membership means
not only attending meetings, but also participating in meaningful
activities
and campus/community projects throughout one’s year of collegiate
membership.
The point of Mortar Board is to give back to the university that enabled
members to attain the academic and extracurricular success they have
experienced. Projects that Mortar Board has been involved with in the
past year include: Last Lecture Series, True Blue Game Days, Fuel Around
the Fountain, Reading is Leading, Freshman & Sophomore Recognition
Event, Faculty Appreciation Dinner, Campus Clean-Up, Habitat for
Humanity, A Million Thanks Letter Writing Campaign to Veterans and
Active Service Members, and Adopt-a-Family.
